Materials and Structures

The board, facing paper, and insert materials in a wine shipping box decide how well a bottle survives transit. Here are the materials we use, where they are used, and the standards we hold them to.

Board Standard

We use greyboard at 1200 g minimum for wine boxes, 1400 g for spirits. No recycled greyboard, no high-moisture paper. Facing paper is 157 g minimum specialty or coated stock. This keeps the box rigid through stacking and drops.

Six common materials

Greyboard with Specialty Paper

Used for rigid wine boxes where the board carries the load and the facing paper carries the print.

Kraft Paper

Used for corrugated shippers and foldable boxes where a natural finish is acceptable.

White Card

Used for retail-ready boxes that need a clean surface for full colour printing.

Gold/Silver Cardboard

Used for gift wine boxes where a metallic finish is part of the design.

Flocked Paper

Used for rigid boxes and inserts where the bottle sits against a soft surface.

Leather-Textured Paper

Used for premium wine boxes where the buyer wants a leather look without leather cost.

Six box structures

Rigid Lid-and-Base

A two-piece box with a separate lid and base, common for single bottle gifts.

Magnetic Closure

A rigid box with magnets holding the lid closed, used for retail display.

Drawer

A slide-out tray inside a sleeve, used for two-bottle sets.

Foldable

A flat-shipped box that erects at the winery, used to save freight space.

Double-Door

A box with two front panels opening from the centre, used for gift presentation.

With Handles

A rigid or corrugated box with a carry handle, used for retail and tasting room sales.

Four insert types

Velvet Tray

A flocked plastic tray that holds the bottle at the base and shoulder.

EVA Foam

A die-cut foam insert that grips the bottle at four points.

Blister

A clear plastic shell that locks the bottle in place for display boxes.

Paper Mould

A moulded pulp insert shaped to the bottle profile, used in corrugated shippers.
